This NBC comedy gives us a new kind of family, although I don’t know how many people are ready to accept it as normal because this show has been surrounded by controversy. It’s already been banned, but any show that tries to suggest a that gay parents might be normal was bound to cause some controversy... I guess they missed Modern Family.
What’s it all about?
Bryan (Andrew Rannells) and David (Justin Bartha) have reached the point in their relationship when two just isn’t enough, which means they have to take a trip to the baby factory pick out an egg and mix themselves up a baby. Meanwhile somewhere in the midwest, Goldie Clemmons (Georgia King) has just walked in on her the father of her child with another woman. So she up and leaves him and her bigmouth bigoted grandmother behind and takes her daughter Shania (Bebe Wood) on a road trip of LA.
Once they reach LA, Shania her mother to give her dream of being a lawyer. In order to achieve this dream she’s going to have to find some money - good timing because Bryan and David are having a bit of trouble finding a surrogate after the last woman they chose tried to blackmail them. It’s a match made in heaven, at least until grandma Jane (Ellen Barkin) comes along and she’s none to happen about her granddaughter gestating the baby of a gay couple.
Is it any good?
It didn’t grab me completely, but I try not to judge pilots too harshly because you never you never can tell how the series will progress. People from different backgrounds with different values are forced to interact and end up forming an unlikely family, it’s been done before and it will be done again.
The characters are fun enough though, Bryan will be everyones favourite gay and his assistant Rocky (NeNe Leakes) is either going to be the most hilarious or the most annoying character on TV. Goldie’s a bit bland but I’m hoping she’ll get better because Georgia King is adorable. Shania is your typical adultchild - super annoying but grandma Jane makes up for it because she is my new favourite racist homophobe ever (I’m sure she will learn her lesson).
You know what, if this whole show consists of Bryan, Rocky and Jane hanging out it could be the best show on television. Seeing as that’s probably not going to happen I’m just hoping the show doesn’t get too preachy, let’s see Bryan and David have some real problems please.
I’ll give it a few more episodes because I did have a bit of a giggle when I watched the pilot and it has the potential to be a cute little comedy... but it’s Ryan Murphy so I’m trying not to get my hopes up.
